Protecting your skin from the sun – it’s not an option, it’s a must!
This is a question we hear so often in the clinic. Is factor 50 better than factor 30? If I put on my factor 30 under my makeup which has a factor 25 in it, is that factor 55?That’s a lot of numbers.
What does SPF stand for?
It stands for Sun Protection Factor. It is a measure of the ability of a sunscreen to protect against UVB radiation. UVB rays penetrate the atmosphere and play an important role in conditions such as premature skin aging, eye damage (including cataracts), and skincancers.
What do the numbers on sunscreen mean?
An SPF 30 will not protect your skin twice as much as using 15. A little bit confusing eh?
An SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB, SPF 30 blocks 97% and SPF 50 blocks 98%. So we can see there is actually very little difference between 30 and 50. Unfortunately there is no sun screen which can protect your skin 100% from the effects of the sun.
